The cultural background of the project
When I first considered creating a project to promote traditional Chinese culture, I researched the cultural context of the project. I researched existing media that focused on traditional Chinese culture such as books (General Knowledge of Ancient Chinese Culture), films (Farewell My Concubine) and documentaries (China on the Tip of the Tongue). From there, I created initial visual references and planning materials such as mood boards, style boards, typography, colour charts and reference images. The book General Knowledge of Ancient Chinese Culture contains the history of several traditional cultures such as
astronomy, calendar, music, geography, imperial examinations, names, rituals, crowns, marriage, burial, patriarchy, kinship, mourning clothes, palaces, carriages, food and clothing.
In the film Farewell My Concubine, at the beginning of the film, the famous actor enters the capital, the street is full of gongs and drums, the crowd is boisterous, the status of the actor is high, equivalent to the current flow of stars, the class leader says "as long as people have to listen to the opera", showing the profound mass base of Peking Opera; and then there is the background of the times, the early days of the Republic of China, the rites and music are in disarray, social unrest has always led to the freedom of thought The freedom of culture and the loosening of the cultural stranglehold of the feudal forces allowed traditional culture to be innovated and inherited; and last but not least, the power of culture.
For example, the first episode of "China on the Tip of the Tongue" - "Nature's Gift" - tells of families pickling sour bamboo shoots in Guangxi, mountain people digging asparagus in Zhejiang, professional lotus root diggers in Hubei and Tibetan girls searching for pine mushrooms.
