Dumplings have a long history in China; one of the Confucian classics, The Book of Rites, compiled by Dai Sheng of the Western Han Dynasty, a treatise devoted to the many kinds of rituals that existed before the Qin and Han dynasties, includes the phrase: "Rice two meat one, combined as bait and fried."

This female kitchen figurine from the Eastern Han period gives us a glimpse of one of the early Chinese 'dumpling' images. This is probably the earliest dumpling we have seen. It also shows that dumplings were a favorite food of the people in the Eastern Han period.

History of Dumplings

图片
In the thousands of years of Chinese culinary history, dumplings were not necessarily the first to appear, but they are certainly the most influential and unique. "The dumpling is a symbol of the Chinese people's hope for a happy and healthy year ahead. Chinese dumplings, or Chinese dumplings in English, are a slightly flattened form of dough filled with a dough skin. In 1972 Chinese archaeologists found several complete dumplings, half-moon shaped, similar to the shape of today's dumplings, in a Tang Dynasty tomb in Tulufan Astana, Xinjiang. These are the earliest physical dumplings ever found. Dumplings became the dominant food of the Chinese New Year in the Han Dynasty. After the social upheaval of the Warring States and the end of the Qin Dynasty, the early Western Han Dynasty implemented a policy of "rest and recuperation", social production was restored and developed, social order was stabilised, the date of the New Year was established and dumplings were ...

After thinking about it, I thought it would be a good idea to use my favorite food - dumplings - as the theme. When I was a child at home, my parents would make dumpling skins with egg wash and would eat egg dumplings accompanied by vermicelli, as well as vegetarian dumplings and fried dumplings dipped in chili oil. Dumplings are a food eaten by every Chinese family and are a cultural symbol belonging to the Chinese New Year.

Reflection

图片
In the Assignment 1 section, my professor told me that my choices were too broad. On reflection, I think the professor was right in saying that Chinese culture is so vast that I could not possibly outline the 5,000 years of Chinese history and culture in one webpage, so I decided to pick one culture from it as my focus.

Thinking

图片
Thinking 1. Life in today's society is very fast-paced and I am afraid that more and more people will gradually forget the history and culture that has been handed down to them since ancient times because of their lives. 2.Chinese culture is vast and profound, and I want to make a webpage in a way that promotes traditional Chinese food culture, so that people nowadays can understand and pass on a culture.   3.My aim in making this webpage is not only to promote traditional culture, but also to make this culture remembered by more and more people and to prevent it from being forgotten.

As science and technology continue to evolve, traditional paper-based cultural communication is not nearly as efficient as it once was. The choice of various social media platforms spreads much faster than paper-based cultural communication. The choice of the internet to spread and promote traditional Chinese culture is now the obvious choice. My website will be a comprehensive resource for traditional Chinese culture, with recommendations for books and documentaries.  Released on 15 October 2021, Immortal Sword and Chivalry 7 is a game world based on the ancient Chinese culture of the Immortals. It is based on ancient Chinese mythology, and through its characterisation, storyline development and game scenario design, it greatly inherits the imagery of classical Chinese literature and conveys the ancient ideology of "chivalry", "benevolence" and "freedom". "The game's scenes are designed with the imagery of classical Chinese literature in mind. The traditional Chinese culture of the hundred schools of thought, literature and art, architectural features, regional customs, clothing and costumes, and medical and ecclesiology are all skillfully integrated together, and have a certain significance and far-reaching influence on the cultural heritage of today's society. First of all, any game has its own world view, and the world view often reflects the cultural roots of a work. The Legend of the Immortal Sword is...

The cultural background of the project

图片
When I first considered creating a project to promote traditional Chinese culture, I researched the cultural context of the project. I researched existing media that focused on traditional Chinese culture such as books (General Knowledge of Ancient Chinese Culture), films (Farewell My Concubine) and documentaries (China on the Tip of the Tongue). From there, I created initial visual references and planning materials such as mood boards, style boards, typography, colour charts and reference images. The book General Knowledge of Ancient Chinese Culture contains the history of several traditional cultures such as astronomy, calendar, music, geography, imperial examinations, names, rituals, crowns, marriage, burial, patriarchy, kinship, mourning clothes, palaces, carriages, food and clothing. In the film Farewell My Concubine, at the beginning of the film, the famous actor enters the capital, the street is full of gongs and drums, the crowd is boisterous, the status of the actor is hi...

Visual reference and planning materials

图片
In terms of visual references and planning materials, after all, the theme is traditional Chinese culture, so I will choose the famous Song font from traditional Chinese culture, as the Song dynasty was the heyday of the culture, and the Song font is exquisite and atmospheric, with a sense of sharpness and a strong recognition of individual fonts. In terms of colour, I would use Chinese red as the main colour and some vintage gold as a secondary colour. Gold is a symbol of royalty and royalty in traditional Chinese culture, adding a sense of sophistication to the website.
